Positively Happy Pets
Positivity Radio
Paws for a second and consider the importance of music for your pets
Noel Edmonds launched a unique radio station called Positively Pets in 2016, surrounded by much press scepticism. It was “the world's first radio station exclusively for our animal chums", laughs Noel. Whilst the press may not have loved the idea, our listeners and their pets thought it was the perfect solution to their pet's anxiety. And it’s not just a crazy idea — science supports the notion that music can have profound benefits for pets which is why so many pet owners leave music on for their beloved companions.
The Science of Music and Pets
Several studies have shown that music has a calming effect on animals, much like it does for humans. Research published in the Journal of Veterinary Behaviour found that dogs housed in shelters, who are often anxious or stressed, showed a significant reduction in stress behaviours when exposed to classical music. Another study by the University of Glasgow revealed that dogs showed the most positive behavioural changes, such as increased relaxation and decreased barking when listening to soft rock or reggae. It might sound bizarre, but dogs tend to relax and show more positive behaviours when listening to reggae. The laid-back rhythms and mellow beats of reggae seem to give dogs that same chilled-out vibe it gives to humans. It’s a quirky idea, but it works – just like us, our furry friends respond to easy-going and calm music, helping to reduce stress and anxiety when left alone.
Cats, similarly, respond well to calming music, particularly tunes that feature gentle heartbeat-like rhythms.
Why does this happen? Animals, especially dogs and cats, are sensitive to their surroundings. Changes in sound, light, and even energy can affect their mood. Music with slower tempos, simple melodies, and minimal instrumentation mirrors nature's calming rhythms, helping pets feel at ease when left alone.
Why people leave music on for pets
As pet owners, we naturally want the best for our animals and leaving music on while we’re out a common method to ensure they feel safe and secure. Here’s why so many people choose to tune in for their pets:
- Soothing Anxiety: Many pets suffer from separation anxiety when their owners go out. The familiar sound of music can create a sense of continuity and comfort, helping to reduce stress. It's like having a calming companion, even when you're not physically there.
- Blocking External Noise: Loud noises like traffic, thunderstorms, or fireworks can be unsettling for pets. Playing music provides a buffer, drowning out the harsh or unexpected sounds that could cause distress.
- Creating Routine: Pets thrive on routine, and associating music with calm can help establish a predictable environment. If they hear relaxing music every time you leave the house, it signals to them that everything is okay.
- Entertainment: Pets, especially dogs, have a keen sense of hearing and often respond well to auditory stimuli. Music provides a form of mental engagement, keeping them entertained and less likely to engage in destructive behaviors like chewing furniture or excessive barking.
