Green Day Takes a Swipe at Elon Musk During Historic South Africa Concert
Updated Jan 21
During their historic first performance in South Africa at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on January 20, 2025, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong took a direct jab at hometown billionaire Elon Musk. While performing their iconic song "American Idiot", Armstrong altered the lyrics, singing "I'm not part of an Elon agenda" instead of the original line.
This isn't the first time the band has modified their lyrics for political commentary. Last year, they changed the same song's lyrics to critique former President Donald Trump's MAGA movement. The band has been vocal about their political stances, with bassist Mike Dirnt previously stating that "Elon Musk actually is the machine."
The performance comes during the Green Day tour, marking their debut concert in South Africa as part of the Calabash South Africa 2025 festival. Fans enjoyed Green Day songs from across their career, including hits from Green Day albums like the iconic Green Day Dookie Album. Musk, who was born in Pretoria, has not yet publicly responded to the band's latest lyrical modification.
