Updated Jan 27
Steuart Smith, the esteemed guitarist who has been an integral part of the Eagles since 2001, has announced his departure from the band due to health issues. Smith revealed that he has been diagnosed with Parkinsonism, a condition that has begun to affect his performance abilities.
In a heartfelt statement, Smith expressed his regret: "It is with profound regret that, due to performance issues associated with my recently diagnosed Parkinsonism, I find that I must bow out of my role with the Eagles while I can still do so gracefully. It's been a great quarter of a century, and I had hoped to be able to finish out this year with the band, but I must now do what's best for all concerned."
Parkinsonism is an umbrella term that encompasses a range of movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease. Symptoms often involve slowed movements, stiffness, tremors, and balance issues. These challenges can significantly impact a musician's ability to perform, making Smith's decision to step down understandable.
Don Henley, co-founder of the Eagles, responded to Smith's announcement with deep appreciation: "Steuart Smith has retired from touring. The Eagles will be forever grateful for the extraordinary talents that he brought to both our recordings and live performances. Steuart will be greatly missed, but he will always be a part of our musical family. We know our many fans join us in wishing him well."
Smith joined the Eagles following the departure of guitarist Don Felder. Over the past 24 years, he has been instrumental in shaping the band's sound during tours and recordings. His exceptional guitar work and musical versatility have been pivotal in maintaining the Eagles' legacy in the modern era.
Beyond his tenure with the Eagles, Smith boasts an impressive musical resume. He has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including Dolly Parton, Rosanne Cash, Wynonna Judd, Trisha Yearwood, Rodney Crowell, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Vince Gill. His contributions to these projects have showcased his adaptability and deep understanding of various musical genres.
In light of Smith's departure, the Eagles have introduced Dallas-based guitarist Chris Holt as his successor for their ongoing performances. Holt, a seasoned musician, has previously worked with notable artists such as Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Stevie Nicks. His extensive experience and talent make him a fitting addition to the band's lineup.
The Eagles are currently continuing their residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, with performances scheduled through April 2025. Fans attending these shows will witness the band's enduring musical prowess, now with Holt contributing his expertise to their iconic sound.
Steuart Smith's departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the Eagles' history. His dedication, skill, and passion have left an indelible mark on the band's legacy. As he steps back to focus on his health, both the band and its fans extend their deepest gratitude and best wishes for his journey ahead.
The music community acknowledges Smith's immense contributions and the challenges he faces with his health. His decision to prioritize his well-being is met with widespread support and admiration. As the Eagles continue their musical journey, the impact of Steuart Smith's artistry will remain a cherished part of their story.
