In a vibrant celebration of Singles Day on 11 November 2024, Capitol Records delighted music enthusiasts by unveiling 22 exclusive vinyl singles. This annual event, originating from China and recognised as the world's largest shopping festival, provided the perfect backdrop for Capitol to showcase both contemporary tracks and timeless classics, catering to a diverse audience of vinyl aficionados.
A Blend of Modern Hits and Timeless Classics
The collection featured fresh pressings from contemporary artists alongside cherished tracks from legendary musicians. Notably, The Cure's "A Fragile Thing" was presented in its RS24 Mix on the A-side, complemented by the RS24 remix on the B-side. Emerging talents like Fletcher contributed with "Doing Better" paired with "Better Version," and Good Neighbors offered "Home" alongside "Keep It Up." These selections highlight Capitol's commitment to promoting both established and up-and-coming artists.
Treasures from the Vault
Delving into its rich archives, Capitol Records reissued several iconic singles. The Beatles were prominently featured with two 7-inch releases: the recently unveiled "Now And Then" backed with "Love Me Do" (1962 Single Version / 2023 mix), and a special edition super deluxe 4xLP + 7-inch box set of "Revolver." Additionally, Ringo Starr's three-disc 45 RPM Singles Collection box set was made available, offering fans a comprehensive look into his solo work.
ABBA enthusiasts were treated to a quartet of releases, including "Happy New Year" paired with "Felicidad" on transparent vinyl with blue splatter, a "Waterloo" / "Watch Out" picture disc, the "Super Trouper" 7-inch Singles box set featuring three singles on coloured vinyl, and the limited edition "Voulez-Vous – The Singles" box set on numbered, coloured vinyl. These offerings underscore Capitol's dedication to preserving and celebrating musical heritage.
Diverse Offerings for Vinyl Collectors
The Singles Day collection extended beyond rock and pop, encompassing a variety of genres. Jazz aficionados could appreciate Frank Sinatra's timeless melodies, while fans of classic pop found joy in Nat King Cole's soulful tunes. Contemporary pop was well-represented with Katy Perry's releases, including "Woman's World" backed by its instrumental version on orange translucent vinyl, and "Daisies" accompanied by its instrumental counterpart.
Troye Sivan's contributions included the "Rush" Glory Edition, featuring the main track backed by its Big Freedia Remix, and the "One Of Your Girls" picture disc. Other notable releases encompassed Catfish and the Bottlemen's "Showtime" on white vinyl, Corinne Bailey Rae's "Been To The Moon" paired with its Stefan Ponce Remix, and Lewis Capaldi's "Someone You Loved" backed by the "1 Mic 1 Take" edition recorded live from Capitol Studios.
