Bill Wyman Reflects on Rolling Stones’ Decision to Continue Without Charlie Watts
Updated Dec 11
In a recent interview with Classic Rock, former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman shared his surprise and mixed feelings about the band's decision to keep performing after the death of drummer Charlie Watts. Watts, a vital member of the Rolling Stones since 1963, passed away in August 2021 at 80 due to complications from surgery.
Wyman, who left the band in 1993, admitted he thought the Rolling Stones would disband following Watts' death, given the drummer's irreplaceable role and charisma. However, the remaining Rolling Stones members—Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood—chose to move forward with Steve Jordan stepping in as their drummer. Wyman emphasized he wasn't disappointed but was surprised by their choice, suggesting the band might not have other significant pursuits outside their iconic music careers.
Despite his initial reaction, Wyman acknowledged the Rolling Stones' resilience and dedication to their music, even as they embark on a new Rolling Stones tour in 2024. The band's legacy endures with a devoted fan base eagerly embracing their new Rolling Stones album and timeless classics.
